Selected novels/narratives and expository text (informational & nonfiction) for each grade level
Course description: The goal of this course is for students to gain a better understanding of English/ Language Arts. Students will learn about the six traits of writing (ideas, content, organization, voice, sentence fluency, and conventions) and how to integrate them into different writing genres. Students will also read, learn about, and respond to different types of literature, including nonfiction and informational text.
Materials needed: Students need notebook paper, a binder/folder, pencils and pens (blue or black ink only), and material to read. Magazines and catalogs are not approved options.
***Back again this year!!! Bring in 2 non-perishable items per detention pass. Help out the local food bank! (Max. 4 non-perishable items = 2 “get out of detention” passes) ***
Class Rules:
1. Be respectful of others’ right to learn.
Be on time and in your seat when the bell rings.
Have materials with you and ready for class.
Listen to instructions the first time.
2. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.
No cursing or teasing.
Be quiet and courteous.
3. All school rules are enforced in the classroom.
Consequences:
If you choose to break a class or school rule the following will result:
1. First offense: Warning
2. Second offense: The student will be required to report after school for a 30 minute detention. If the student elects
To skip detention, more time will be added and the student may be referred to the office.
3. Third offense or major offense: The student will be sent to the office and a parent conference will be scheduled.
Absence Policy: Attendance is important. The absence policy from the student handbook will be followed. If you are absent, see the instructor the next day before or after school for missed assignments. If you miss a test day, you have three days to make it up. All missed work is your responsibility. You must arrange to make it up. If you are absent for a school function it is your responsibility to get your work before the arranged absence and have it finished the day you return.

Tardy Policy: A tardy is when the student is not in their seat when the bell rings. If you are late because of another class, it is your responsibility to get a signed note from that teacher. The tardy policy from the student handbook will be followed. If you are more than 10 minutes late you will be considered absent.
1. First/second tardy: Student receives a recorded verbal warning.
2. Third/fourth tardy: 30 minute detention
3. More than five – see school policy

Grading scale:
A – 90%- 100%
B - 80% - 89%
C- 70 % - 79%
D – 60% - 69%
F - 0 % - 59%
All assignments will be included in your grade including: writing assignments, journal writing, tests, quizzes, reading logs, daily work, and homework.
Homework:
All homework will be turned in at the beginning of class. Your name, date, and assignment need to be in the upper right hand corner of your paper. If you do not have your homework completed when class starts you will receive a half hour detention. Any homework later than a day without prior arrangements will receive a zero.
Reading logs are weekly homework that is due every Monday. They are worth 45 points and must be signed by your parent. They do not follow the above homework arrangement. If Reading logs are not turned in Monday or Tuesday if absent you will receive a zero. ***

No food or drink will be allowed in the classroom except water in a clear container. Students will be expected to keep our room clean.
